JAPAN 1868
The Age of the Samurai was coming to an end after more than 200 years of turbulent governing history.

At the turn of that century, between late 1800 and early 1900, a student of Martial Arts was to become a legendary warrior. After seeing the destruction and suffering brought by conflict and war, he chose a path leading to Peace.

Morihei Ueshiba’s goal was to share an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury.

In 1942, during a reorganization of Japanese martial arts under the Greater Japan Martial Virtue Society, and after decades of refining and perfecting his skills, Morihei Ueshiba, also referred to as Great Teacher, or O’Sensei, offered his art for the first time under its now well known name A I K I D O.

Upon the Founder’s wish, his best students traveled the world and began their journey of teaching Aikido throughout the world. Their efforts led to a rise of a new wave of teachers who came from very different cultures and backgrounds, and whom, after decades of dedicated training, have themselves become the keepers of Aikido’s treasures.

Aikido, or the Art of Peace, is now found around the world and has more than 2 million practitioners worldwide, bringing together people of all ages, nationalities, and cultural backgrounds.

This film is the story of Aikido, told through the voice of some of the people who have have been given the responsibility of transmitting the Art of Peace to the new generations and across all boundaries. Across all lands, there are now many wonderful teachers, fulfilling O’Sensei’s dream of healing the world.

The Film is an homage to their generosity and a testimony to their journey of learning and sharing the work and values of Aikido. The Project is an ongoing effort to bring Aikido’s principles to the whole world.
